Owning a Habitat Home

At Mason County Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to live -- including you! We build a home in Mason County every year with hardworking, low-income families, outside volunteers and the local community. We then sell the homes at no profit with no or low interest mortgages to Habitat families, whom we have prepared to be successful homeowners.

How it works...

Mason County Habitat partners with families to be successful homeowners by training them to pay for their homes, maintain their homes and connect with the community. We require our families to take our homebuyer education classes on topics ranging from finance and budgeting to home repair and maintenance. Additionally, Mason County Habitat provides family mentors who meet regularly with Habitat families to guide them through the home buying process.

Mason County Habitat manages the land development and construction processes, purchasing and preparing the land where we build. Mason County Habitat also purchases the materials and hires the professional services to build the non-volunteer aspects (slab, HVAC etc) of the home. We engage the entire community to raise the money to build the homes, including congregations, businesses, schools, civic organizations, associations, government, corporations and individuals.

We also engage the community to provide some of the volunteer labor to build the homes and also provide background activities such as meals. Our experienced and passionate construction staff, along with skilled regular volunteers, lead groups (all volunteers) through the entire construction process. Our volunteers build hand in hand with our Habitat families, who must contribute 300 hours of sweat equity on their home.

Mason County Habitat ensures the credit worthiness of the families we select and prepares them for the financial responsibilities of homeownership. The new homeowners decide the length of the mortgage, up to thirty three years.

Our homeowners and volunteers find the process to be incredibly rewarding and see dreams come true on a daily basis. Want to learn more about owning a home? Read more about Mason County Habitat for Humanity qualifications and how to apply!
